Wed, 17 January 2007 15:04 As one year turns into the next, and we hope against hope that the future is not filled with the eternal return of the same, we think about those who've passed. Music from Magnatune.com and Opsound.org Thanks for listening. Comments[6] |
This was a wonderfully tender program, Steve -- and you never lost your balance treading in the thickets of grief. I was strongly reminded of the beautiful page you wrote in your blog a year ago, which although seemingly about me was actually one of my mom's best obituaries. That three dimensional spider web image of remembering those we've lost is a beautiful metaphor. Two thoughts: there might be a parallel three dimensional spider web of forgetting and misremembering, source of mortality just as the web of memory seems a source of eternal life. And: in that web, the first one, are we supposed to be spiders or flies?
Thank you for the kind thoughts, Alva.
Parallel dimensions hurt my head. Your suggestion of their possibility (probability? – I wouldn’t be surprised) which might include one of forgetting and “misremembering in this context forces a look at history and memory and therefore “reality and whether or not there can be a science of such pursuits, given that we are reliant upon a convention of five senses.
At what point and to what degree do we accept mystery and invoke faith? What must we trust in ourselves to go on with our lives when these questions go unanswered?
As for your question about whether we are supposed to be spiders or flies in this web I’ve described, the answer is most certainly perhaps - suppositions being what they are.

Steve,
Thank you for another excellent pod cast. I concur with Alva, you kept your balance over difficult terrain. Though we all recognize that death is a necessity in the world as it now exists, there little we can see to commend its general application. The only good that it can do is to remind us of our common fate and to therefore:
1) Turn for arrogance to humility and be kind
2) Remember that the time available to decide how we will spend eternity is short and unpredictable.
It is always good to here your voice but it was much better to see your face. I hope you enjoyed your stay in Cabo San Lucas and your trip home was good.
